Your hair is out of control, the hairdressers are in quarantine, and you are seriously considering cutting it yourself. If you need someone to talk you out of it, then this post is not for you.
I get that under normal circumstances you would never betray your barber, but this uncharted territory. For the first time in ALL OF HISTORY, barbers and stylists have shut their doors to the public. Some people in the US are going on week 8 of quarantine. Some are locked in their homes. Some still have to go to work. ALL need haircuts.
I say that if you have the desire, and a healthy DIY spirit, then you should go for it! Celebrities are doing it! Gwen Stefani filmed herself cutting her hubby Blake Shelton's hair on their patio. David Beckham, the King of men's style, gave himself a buzz cut. And the rockstar PINK, known for her badass barber cuts gave herself a bad fade, and then laughed at herself and did interviews anyway! If they can do it you can!
Who should not cut their hair: If you are so delicate that one wrong hair move will have you crumbling to pieces then please move on to an article about baking.
Who Should cut their hair: Literally anyone else. I don't care what profession you are in, even if you're in the public eye, there has never been a better time to have a bad haircut. No one will judge you. We all get it.
How to handle it if you mess up big-time: If you have really short hair, consider buzzing it all off like David Beckham. I've done it. It's liberating. If that is not you and you get lost in the middle of the cut and it keeps getting shorter, just stop. Put the scissors down. Walk away. Buy some headbands, hats, bobby pins, whatever you need to face the folks at the grocery store, and have a good laugh at your own expense.
There are plenty of tutorials online, but posted below are a few from Sunny D the Barber that have helped dozens of our clients.
Remember at the end of the day that it is just hair. You are not alone. We are all in this together. If you decide to cut your own or each other's hair, have fun with it. Do your best. Post a picture. Have a good laugh, and know your stylist will fix it for you.
